Gorilla safari itinerary
Day 1 - 07:00 AM – Drive from Kampala to Bwindi: 8-9 hour journey.
Depart Kampala early heading southwest. Pass through the rolling green hills of the countryside, making a brief morning stop at the Equator crossing for photos. Enjoy a local buffet lunch in Mbarara town before winding up into the dramatic, terraced Kigezi Highlands (the "Switzerland of Africa") to arrive at your rainforest lodge by late afternoon for dinner.
Day 2 - 07:40 AM – The Gorilla Trekking Experience: 2-7 hour trek, off-grid
After an early breakfast, head to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) park headquarters for a vital safety briefing. You will be assigned to a group of maximum 8 people and enter the dense jungle with armed rangers and trackers. Once you locate your assigned gorilla family, you are granted exactly 1 hour to observe them. Head back for your trekking certificate, and spend a relaxed evening at the lodge.
Day 3 - 07:30 AM – Return Journey to Kampala: 8-9 hour journey.
Enjoy breakfast while listening to the misty forest wake up, pack your bags, and begin the scenic drive back to Kampala. You will stop for a warm lunch along the highway and arrive back in the capital city by mid-to-late evening, concluding your safari.

You need a reasonable level of fitness, but you don't need to be an elite athlete. Bwindi is a mountainous rainforest with altitudes ranging between 1,160m and 2,600m. The trek involves hiking off-trail through thick vegetation, steep ridges, and muddy slopes. Treks can take anywhere from 2 to 7 hours depending on where the gorilla family moved the night before. If you are worried about your fitness, you can hire a local porter at the trailhead ($15–$20 USD) to carry your pack and give you a physical push/pull on the steeper sections. Park rangers also deliberately group trekkers based on age and fitness levels during the morning briefing.
Absolutely not. Because humans and mountain gorillas share roughly 98.4% of their DNA, they are highly susceptible to human airborne illnesses. A simple human cold or flu can easily be fatal to a gorilla. If you show obvious symptoms of an infectious disease (coughing, heavy sneezing, fever) at the morning briefing, park rangers will bar you from entering the forest to protect the primates. If you feel sick before the trek, declare it to your guide immediately so they can assist you with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) medical refund or rescheduling process.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority adjusts pricing and booking rules to encourage travel during quieter months: Peak Season (Jan–Feb, June–Sept, Dec): Standard tracking permits cost $800 USD for foreign non-residents. Low Season (April, May, and November): Permits drop to a discounted rate of $600 USD for foreign non-residents to boost travel during the rainy months. The Crucial Payment Rule: UWA requires instant full payment to secure any gorilla permit. There is no longer a temporary holding window, meaning your tour operator cannot provisionally reserve a slot without immediate funding.
Standard safari clothes (shorts and sandals) will not work in Bwindi's dense undergrowth. You should pack: Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support and deep grip for slick, muddy clay paths. Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers to protect your skin from stinging nettles and scratchy branches. Thick socks to tuck your trousers into, which blocks safari ants from climbing up your legs. Tough garden gloves (like leather or rubberized ones) because you will frequently grab onto wild branches and thorns for balance.
