Jinja Tour Itinerary

Day 1 - Transfer to Jinja & Mabira Forest

Itinerary Image

Depart Kampala early: Avoid the worst highway traffic.

Start your road trip early eastwards along the Kampala-Jinja Highway. Leaving by 7:00 AM is critical to beat the notorious traffic gridlock leaving Kampala. The 85km drive typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours.

10:30 AM – Pit stop at Mabira Forest:Stretch your legs.

Stop at Mabira Forest Reserve for a quick, refreshing 1-hour nature walk or a ziplining session. It breaks up the drive perfectly and gives you a chance to spot red-tailed monkeys and forest birds.

01:00 PM – Arrive in Jinja & Lunch:Fuel up for the adrenaline.

Cross the iconic Source of the Nile Bridge into Jinja City. Check into your lodge (popular spots include Jinja Nile Resort, The Haven, or Nile River Camp) and have a hearty lunch over the river.

03:00 PM – The Nile Bungee Jump:44-meter plunge.

Head to the bungee jumping platform overlooking the cliffs of the River Nile. You’ll get harnessed up, receive your safety brief, and take the ultimate leap. If you want a calmer end to the day, you can couple this with a relaxed sunset motorized canoe cruise to the exact historic Source of the Nile spot.

Day 2 - Adventure Sports Begin

Itinerary Image

07:30 AM – Rafting Briefing & Gear fitting: The main event.

Eat a solid breakfast and head to the rafting base. You’ll be fitted with your helmet and high-flotation life jacket, get assigned to a boat, and undergo a comprehensive safety and paddle briefing.

09:00 AM to 03:30 PM – Grade 4/5 White-Water Rafting: Conquering the Nile rapids.

Spend the day navigating roughly 10–21 kilometers of the Nile's spectacular rapids (including famous world-class runs like 'Big Brother' and 'Overtime'). The trip includes a mid-river lunch snack (usually fresh fruit and biscuits) on the water.

04:00 PM – Late lunch, pack up & return: Heading home.

The rafting trip finishes with a well-deserved, heavy BBQ lunch and cold drinks at the take-out point. Change into dry clothes, grab the digital photos taken by the professional river photographers, and begin your drive back to Kampala, arriving by mid-evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to swim to go white-water rafting?

No, swimming experience is not required. This is the most common concern, but you will be outfitted with high-flotation life jackets and heavy-duty helmets. Every commercial rafting trip is accompanied by professional safety kayakers who are trained to pull people out of the water within seconds if a raft flips. If you are a non-swimmer, just let your guide know during the morning briefing so they can seat you in a more secure spot in the boat

Can I realistically fit both white-water rafting and bungee jumping into just 2 days?

Yes, easily—if you structure it right. White-water rafting on the Nile is typically a full-day commitment (usually from 9:00 AM to around 3:00 or 4:00 PM) covering roughly 21 kilometers of rapids. Because of this, the best way to structure your itinerary is:

  • Day 1: Arrive from Kampala, do your optional activities (like the 44-meter Nile bungee jump, quad biking, or a sunset boat cruise to the Source of the Nile), and relax at your lodge.

  • Day 2: Dedicate the entire day to the rafting experience before heading back.

3. What are the weight and age restrictions for the optional bungee jump?

While rafting is generally open to teenagers (typically ages 16+ for the intense Grade 5 rapids), bungee jumping has strict physical constraints for safety:

  • Weight Limit: You must weigh a minimum of 35 kg (77 lbs) and a maximum of 110 kg (242 lbs). This ensures the bungee cord stretches and rebounds exactly as designed.

  • Age Limit: The minimum age is typically 13 years old.

  • Health Restrictions: You cannot jump if you are pregnant or have a history of high blood pressure, heart conditions, epilepsy, or severe back/neck injuries.

What should I wear and pack for these activities?

The golden rule here is to pack light and leave valuables at the lodge.

  • For Rafting: Wear quick-drying clothes like board shorts and a lightweight t-shirt or swimsuit. Bring a dry change of clothes, a towel, and plenty of waterproof sunscreen (the equatorial sun reflecting off the water is intense).

  • For Bungee Jumping: Wear securely fitted athletic clothing and running shoes or strapped sandals (no skirts or dresses allowed). You must completely empty your pockets—phones, keys, and loose jewelry will easily become projectiles or get lost in the Nile.

Are these activities safe? What happens if it rains?

Yes, they are highly regulated and very safe. The rafting companies on the Nile use world-class equipment and certified guides who know the river's deep-water channels perfectly. The bungee platform at Kalagala Falls utilizes a dual-safety system (ankle ties combined with a body harness torso backup).

As for the weather: both activities proceed in the rain. Tropical showers are common in Uganda, and since you are going to get completely soaked rafting anyway, a bit of rain won't stop the fun. Operations will only briefly pause if the jump masters or river guides detect high winds or severe electrical storms, which usually pass quickly.
