If you are planning a Queen Elizabeth National Park safari, the first question is usually how many days to give it. Queen Elizabeth sits in western Uganda, about 7 to 8 hours' drive from Kampala. It has savannah plains, crater lakes, the Kazinga Channel and a remote southern sector famous for tree-climbing lions. Too few days and you spend most of the trip in the car. Too many and you may skip other highlights, like gorilla trekking in Bwindi.
This guide compares 2, 3 and 4-day safaris, so you can decide how many days to spend in Queen Elizabeth National Park based on your budget, your wildlife priorities and your energy for long drives.

The Short Answer
For most travellers, 3 days is the sweet spot. It gives you a dawn game drive on the Kasenyi Plains, an afternoon Kazinga Channel boat cruise and a scenic return via the Katwe craters. Choose 4 days if you want the Ishasha sector or extra activities. Choose 2 days only if time or budget is very tight.
| 2 Days | 3 Days | 4 Days | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driving vs. game viewing | Mostly driving | Balanced | More time in the park |
| Kasenyi game drive | Rushed or skipped | Yes | Yes |
| Kazinga Channel cruise | Possible | Yes | Yes |
| Katwe craters | Unlikely | Yes | Yes |
| Tree-climbing lions (Ishasha) | No | Generally no | Yes, with a modified route |
| Best for | Tight schedules | First-time safari-goers | Wildlife enthusiasts |
Is 2 Days Enough for Queen Elizabeth National Park?
Technically yes, but it's tight. With 7 to 8 hours of driving each way, a 2-day trip leaves roughly one full day in the park. You can do a game drive or a boat cruise, but rarely both comfortably, and you will probably miss the early-morning window when predators are most active.
A 2-day trip works if you only want a taste of the park or are adding it to a longer itinerary. If you can spare one more day, it makes a big difference.
Why 3 Days Is the Best Length for Most Visitors
A 3-day Queen Elizabeth safari lets you see the park's main highlights without rushing:
- Day 1: Drive west from Kampala, stopping at the Equator at Kayabwe for photos. Have lunch in Mbarara, then descend the Kichwamba Escarpment into the Rift Valley and reach your lodge for sunset.
- Day 2: Head out at dawn for a Kasenyi Plains game drive, when lions and leopards are most active. Then take the afternoon Kazinga Channel boat cruise past hippos, elephants, crocodiles and waterbirds.
- Day 3: Drive through the Katwe explosion craters for views toward the Rwenzori Mountains, then return to Kampala by evening.
This pace gives you both the "land safari" and the "water safari" in one trip, which is why the 3-day format is so popular. Our 3 Days Queen Elizabeth Park Safari follows exactly this plan. It includes park fees, the boat cruise, two nights at a park lodge, full board and a private 4x4 with a pop-up roof, from $750 per adult.
What 3 days does not cover: the tree-climbing lions. They live in the Ishasha sector in the far south, a 2 to 3 hour drive from the Kasenyi and Mweya areas. Adding that drive to a 3-day trip means a lot of time in the vehicle for little extra viewing, so we don't recommend forcing it in.
When 4 Days Makes More Sense
Add a fourth day if any of these apply to you:

- You want to see the tree-climbing lions. An extra day makes the trip to Ishasha realistic, and Ishasha also works as a stopover if you are continuing to Bwindi for gorilla trekking.
- You want optional activities. These include UWA lion tracking research (around $100) or chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge (around $50), both booked in addition to the base safari.
- You prefer a slower pace. Four days means less time rushing between sightings and more time at the lodge.
- You are a keen photographer or birder. More days means more chances at good light and rare sightings.
Our 4 Days Queen Elizabeth Safari is built for this longer, more relaxed experience of the park.
Other Things to Consider
Budget. Park entry is $40 per day for foreign non-residents, and UWA permits run on a strict 24-hour clock from the moment you enter. Leaving even a few minutes late on your last day can trigger an extra day's fee, which is another reason a well-planned itinerary matters.
Time of day. The best game viewing is early morning. Staying overnight inside or near the park lets you be on the Kasenyi Plains at dawn rather than arriving after a long drive.
Your wider trip. If Queen Elizabeth is one stop on a longer Uganda safari, such as combining it with Bwindi, 3 days is usually enough. If it is your only destination, 4 days gives you a fuller experience.
So, How Many Days Should You Spend in Queen Elizabeth National Park?
- 2 days: a quick taste, with lots of driving.
- 3 days: the best balance of wildlife, scenery and value for most travellers.
- 4 days: ideal for tree-climbing lions, optional activities and a relaxed pace.
