A Beginner’s Tips for Hiking in Uganda

Dubbed the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda boasts awesome places for both long and short hikes. These include majestic and Large Mountains like the Rwenzori Mountains, Virunga volcanoes, Mt. Elgon, hills like the undulating hills in Fort Portal and Kabale, rocks including the Tororo hill, Wanale and other landscapes such as inselbergs in many areas in the country. First test your hiking skills

Pack the right gear

The right clothes; if you want to enjoy this adventure ensure that the clothes you are packing will offer comfort when climbing. Major things to carry include t-shirts, ski jackets, trekking pants, pairs of socks, travel towel and gloves.

Hiking shoes; the type of shoes you choose to take for your hiking tour matter a lot for they can either make or break the experience. Endeavor to get hiking shoes that fit and will still give you comfort even after an hour two of trekking. If you can’t get hiking shoes, opt for jogging shoes that have a good grip.

Other things to carry for your mountain climbing tour include; a day backpack, water bottle, headlamp and scarf among others.

Pack right and light        

A lightweight pack is big enough to carry all essential gear for the hike plus necessary items such as camera, rain jacket, snacks, water and a power bank. Your backpack bag should have a water proof cover to protect your property on a rainy day.

Consider safety first

Mountain climbing especially on destinations like mount Rwenzori is adventurous. It is important and advisable to alert your people of where you are heading plus the period of time you are likely to be there.

Also pack;

  • A personal first aid kit which might comprise of antibiotic ointment, bandages, blister treatment and any other medications you may need
  • A hat, sunscreen and long sleeved shirts to protect your skin
  • Enough drinking water and energy giving snacks to keep you hydrated and energized
  • A head torch for light in the night
