History.
It was founded in the 19th century and officially received status as a city in 1962 when Uganda got its independence. Its name “Kampala” originated from the fact that there were many “Impala-Antelopes” found there at that time and it was named by Lord Frederick Lugard, after translating the Luganda word “kasozi ka impala” meaning “hill of Impala” from which its short form “Kampala” was developed and so Kampala referred to the hills on which he had built his Fort. After the establishment of the Fort, Kampala city grew very rapidly and expanded into seven hills which today are referred to as the historical origins of Kampala and these are Mulago, Old Kampala, Makerere, Kibuli, Rubaga, Kololo and Namirembe hill.
